At the state level we support legislative efforts for cost of living raises, repayment of teachers retirement fund, and credit for veterans. It is interesting that Indiana is one of only two states that do not provide automatic COLA's for pensions. We have to fight for what we get each year. Please thank our local educators for their support of a special '13th check' which was added to your September pension check this past year. In these difficult economic times, it is most appreciated!
Twenty-three applications from students were received for the Scholarship Program. The applications, from the standpoint of grades earned, were within the guidelines of the program; the essays for choosing education as a career were, for the most part, clear and concise, making the final choice by the Scholarship Committee very difficult. Eight scholarships, one in each area, were awarded to students who had completed at least their second year of college. The scholarship will be paid to the college in which the student is enrolled. The guidelines for awarding the scholarship state that the recipient will be the son/daughter, grandson/granddaughter, legal dependent or spouse of an active, retired, or deceased member of the Indiana State Teachers' Retirement Fund.
Locally, we support projects such as the refurbishing of the Tucker School at New Bedford and the Reading Junction of White County. A special donation basket will be passed at each meeting to support these projects - bring your loose bills and pocket change to help!
